With the release of the new Core 2020 series (M20 for short) a new limited format is introduced. If the recent success of Wizards’ new game design team continues to produce interesting and challenging design forms, the M20 designs are likely to generate a lot of excitement.
To win, you need to prepare for the design, know what to expect during the design and be able to think about the design after the competition. We will discuss each element to give you a better chance to reach the top.
A successful design begins before you even set foot in the company.
Before you can cut off the seal of the first parcel or pay the entrance fee for MTG Arena / MTGO, you need to know what you are getting into. Looking at M20 spoilers is a good start. But it’s not that valuable if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
Let’s just say you can still read the cards while you’re writing them. It is therefore better to take more time to understand the situation as a whole.
M20 Archetype Projects
Before writing a project, you want to familiarize yourself with the topics presented in the sense of a limited circle. The themes of M20 are shown in the five three-coloured corners below.

- Far-reaching: White + green + (black)
- Inspection/Battlefield Entrance: Blue + black + (green)

- Items: Green + red + (blue)
The archetypes mentioned above are mentioned as the first two colors with their combination of 2 primary colors. The color in brackets is a kind of secondary variation in which this theme occurs, but is not the main component of this strategy.
Theft, for example, is a synergistic theme for all jacksai (white, blue and red), but it is emphasized more strongly in white and blue, and in red there are still cards that support this plan.
Knowing that this tricolour exists and in which colours it comes, is a good start to win M20 sketches.

In general, most players must and will draw a two-color card deck and possibly a three-color deck to make a splash for something particularly strong. Depending on the 2 colours you are in, you will want to be aware of the themes and the synergies you need to keep in mind.
In preparation for project
The preparation can only take as long as it takes to open the packs and select the cards. Each project will be unique, but we can still draw some fundamental lessons from the projects.
Lesson 1: Wheelshall not be reinvented.
Most basic kits have a relatively flat power stage. This means that the cards in the whole game do not differ much in quality and that most of them are close together. Of course, each kit contains exceptional bombs, but the M20 is more consistent in its performance than its last predecessor, War of the Spark. Chances are that your best cards in the deck are not as bright as in other card games.
In that sense, if you come across those bombs, you probably want to push yourself in that color and stay there. Open a bomb in suit 1 or 2 early enough to penetrate this color, while in suit 3 it is sometimes too late.
Play your bombs
When you get the bomb, do everything you can to play it. It’s very simple.
The exceptional bombs of this set will be the most mythical rarities, including 5 Riders and on the mythical rarities Aircraft Hikers. For example, Sorin, the Lord of Imperial Blood, is not great, because there are only 5 rare vampires in M20. Only the vampire of the star moon and the bloodthirsty aviator are good. Baronius Vampire, Blood Breaker and Blood Epicure are not ideal cards for this set.

There are many rare bombs that can be used to follow this path if you see them earlier, including most of the tricolor cycle and a few other threats/motorbikes for duels on a map.
- Sefara, Skye Blade.
- Breathing, seeing everything
- Vilis, the blood dealer.
- Dracusett, the pine of the flame.
- Gargos, the angry onlooker.
- The presence of horror
- Ambush night backpack
These rarities are worth taking with you when they are in your flowers, even if they can be expensive. And in the case of the first two, it’s worth trying to find a way to play them.
Lesson 2: Choose good cards and do not overestimate the synergy of.
You might be tempted to really put together a complete game that combines well with a good simple and easy card.
For example, you can draw a green card game that makes more creatures appear on the board (maybe with a card like Win) and choose between the courses of the Vicious Puppy and the Centaur.
They cost the same, but your puppy will give you a 2. Body that can have a synergy with other cards. While the cursor only shows a more complete statistic in a body. What do you want?
I take Curser because he’s better on a very basic level. It’s 3/3 instead of 2/3. To hell with the synergy, at least this time.
If the synergy is really as strong as , you will want to give priority to raw energy. Because this synergy won’t happen as often as you think.

Nowhere is it arbitrary to draw a line under synergy against brutal power, but making decisions like this is fun. In the long run, they’ll help you earn more. They also give you the opportunity to reflect on your decisions after the games, which we will discuss in the post-project section where we will reflect on the project.
Another thing, if you draw good cards, you end up playing very exhausted during the game. My creature deals with yours, you kill mine, I kill yours, and in the end, we’re almost even.
In the end there are not many 2’s for the price of 1 and other values that could be used in projects with a flat performance level. Due to the nature of the format, you want to achieve the highest possible average power level. If your cards are only slightly higher than those of your opponents, you will win the war of attrition on average and possibly the game more often.
Lesson 3: Make sure they do not call.
The design of the strategy focuses on samples of 2 to 5 of each tutu, as all these tutus are dissected and selected by 1 to 4 people sitting next to you. The rest of the cards in these bundles are the ones they missed, and if you find a strong card that should already have been selected, it can symbolize a suit you didn’t choose.
In M20 there are strong signals for open colours in the form of gold cards and the strongest common features of the kit.

Although the 10 gold cards are all excellent stones and my current top 5 is below. I prefer those five because with a small extra investment they create something like an engine or an advantage for you. Even though some colour combinations may not be the best.

Best raw material for the M20 project
In addition to the gold cards, you must follow the most powerful common features in each suit. My first two are shared with every color to watch the food:
- White: Pacifism and alarm.
- It’s blue: Cloud finder and boreal element
- Black: Murder and a despicable thief.
- It’s red: The outrage of Chandra and Lavakin Browler.
- It’s green: Silverbeck Shaman and Lifkin-Druid

In general, I tend to think that white is the weakest color. The other 4 colours all seem to be above the power of white. So if you can avoid dealing with whites when you don’t have to, you’re better off. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, and it doesn’t mean it can’t be good. It just means that, in my opinion, you have to fight harder to reach the strength level of your opponents who don’t play against whites. If I had to play white, I would want to mate with blue or green in that order.
As for the other colours, I think black can be a bit behind the theme (blue, red, green). I’d still like to play black. It seems that Temur’s more aggressive and elusive colours can actually be polished later in the game. Compare that to their aggressiveness and strength and you have a very good game. I thought I was happy with the terraces in Temur’s flowers.
So these are my values for the classification of flowers in the M20 project:
- Level 1 : Blue, red, black.
- Level 2 : Black
- Level 3 : White
Lesson 4: Respect for the buffetCards
If you play the best of the three design games, you’ll play more board games later than before. The design of the M20 has a lot to offer with some really great buffet options. You will want to vote during the editing process. So you have lots of opportunities to sit at the buffet, which is always good.
Here are some of the main buffet options:
- Colored whores (numerous) : Pious redemption, ethereal gust of wind, dragon beetle, black beetle, poison catcher, roasted meat and summer nappy.
- Removal of artifacts/inchants : Solvent and natural finish
- Anti-flyer: Spotless air attack and crash (other colours have easy access to the flyers)

Oh, and there’s always the fake buffet thing when you have nothing to do. One will land and the other will land, in case your opponent notices. Thinking sports should be one thing, right? But you have to take extra land when you build your deck, and that’s not so important in the arena.
After the design you have to think about the design and the games you have played. This will help you win more in the M20 draft and develop as a player.
You need to recognize and remember the times when you could have chosen Carta-A instead of Carta-B at the time of conception, but it was important to you. When this happens, it gives you the opportunity to notice and reflect on how that decision was made. I hope it’s better than bad, but you’ll learn.
Another example to consider is if you are faced with a time when you have dead cards in your hand or a time when another card would be better than a take card, write that card down mentally. The map may not be as good as you thought it would be when you chose it.
For example, cards that may be too cute for what you need, usually as something not absolutely necessary, which is best combined with multiple cards, but they never come together. Damn it. But we have to be honest with ourselves as players to think about whether it’s better to be 2/2, or what your next best card is.
Side panel or Main deck?
If you are often on the menu, make sure you are at the buffet. Maybe you should have had it from the start, depending on the card situation. I don’t think it’s crazy to have a gaping hole to deal with flying creatures. Of course you can’t play and lose a real escape threat, or you can play and have a potentially dead card.

Another way to think about designing your M20 is to give your deck to a friend and see if it’s from the same deck you built. This works best with sealed pools, but if they differ on 1 or 2 cards, you have the opportunity to see if you agree and discuss. (These discussions about strategy and solutions are one of my favorite aspects of magic).
Learn more and earn more
You can learn a lot from any design, especially from new things in your life cycle. Whether you win or lose, it is important to remember that you can always learn and always have fun.
